Marketing Tips to Sell your Soap!

Selling natural handmade soap can be a rewarding and lucrative way to make some extra cash or depending on how motivated you are - earn a decent living. Soap is a consumable product  so if your customers are happy - they will keep coming back to purchase more. We've identified three areas that are key  to successfully selling handmade soap:
  • Packaging
  • Product Knowledge
  • Visibility and Access
Below are tips  to help you in these areas to launch a successful soap business. We wish you the best of luck and lots of enjoyment on your venture!

Packaging

Your target market will dictate what your packaging should look like. If you are going for the minimalist crowd then consider selling your soap deli-style: naked bars wrapped at purchase with tissue paper. If you are trying to attract the young crowd then go with an edgy design that speaks to them. Take time to research what appeals to your target audience, to the customers you want to attract to buy your product. The possibilities are limited to your creative imagination and your budget - paper wraps, boxes, fabric bags, or wood boxes. Your packaging attracts your buyer so time spent on the details is time well-spent.

Product Knowledge

Get to know your product by using it. Learn about the ingredients and benefits of the various oils and essential oils then be sure to share that information with your customers. People love to learn new information and they appreciate it when you can provide them with some valuable information that will help them in some way. For example - if you have a customer that is trying to manage acne and you happen to sell a soap that is made with detoxifying activated charcoal then you would recommend that soap to them and explain the benefits. Providing a solution to a problem for your customer goes a long way to securing the purchase of your product.

Visibility & Access

Customers need to see your product before they will ever consider purchasing it. Making sure it is visible on as many platforms as possible is crucial. Soap is a product that sells best when the customer can experience it with their senses - smell, sight, and touch - so providing as many possiblities is key. Farmer's Markets and in-home Soap Parties are two of the best and most economical ways to launch your soap line and at the same time build a clientele for your online sales. Having a presence online is important as well - even though customers cannot smell your product - if you provide provocative descriptions with top quality photos of your product  you will help to satisfy the sensory requirement needed to sell your soap. In addition, online craft markets such as Etsy can be very successful if you are willing to put in the time.
